Amazing. The "satanic panic" and the various other stories and claims of ritual child abuse etc has been of interest, peripherally, to me for about twenty years. Of all the things I've read I have never come across this information. Thank you for researching and writing this.

Helen's avatar

If you want more info, you could probably look into Collin Ross (who is pictured at the podium alongside Steinem and Braun) who followed the Corydon Hammond route and attached MKUltra and Project Monarch conspiracies to it.

Or just like... look up whatever The Satanic Temple has up on Gray Faction about the organization shared between them (the ISSTD).

This is Tracey being very good.

That is some amazing dig into her. I did a lengthy article last year on the whole 80s satanic panic and never discovered that in my research. Interesting find.

What I always found shady about her was that she worked for the CIA. To her credit, she never ran from it but quotes like this from her were rather bizarre- “In my experience, The Agency was completely different from its image; it was liberal, nonviolent and honorable.”

Haha. You mean the same Agency that was in the 60s toppling regimes all over the world and installing dictatorships like the Shah in Iran and Sukarno in Indonesia at the time.

And by the time she wrote that, MULTRA had been exposed by the Church Committee.

She was the definition of controlled opposition

N Martin's avatar

She dated America's leading war criminal.

Michael's avatar

That shows her to be either very hypocritical or very stupid

Diamond Boy's avatar

Stupid: overwhelmed with enthusiasm and smitten with the meaning imbued by her righteous crusade. It must have felt glorious. Yes Gloria was after the glorious and didn’t it pay well. What was her net worth at the time of her death?

She was an analogue to Billy Graham, but old Billy boy had better material.

The Gray Man's avatar

She was not involved in MK Ultra. You can read about what she was involved in. It was literally just a pay for social experimenting thing, much like any NGO giving out money to any thing

Basil Rathbone's avatar

I didn't say she was. I was correcting Andrew Murphy's calling it MULTRA instead of MK-ULTRA. But Steinem was a phony and certainly a collaborator with the CIA.

The Gray Man's avatar

You know the Shah in Iran was successful for over 15 years before the Communists came in to help overturn it, right?

The only reason the Ayatollah is in charge is because the Communists came in expecting to run everything at the end of the day, turns out the Ayatollah was a little bit smarter than the average communist infiltration of a uprising and instead killed all the Communists at the end of the day.

Michael, thank you for posting this. I literally haven’t laughed this hard in a really long time. You’re actually one of my heroes.

I agree it’s genuinely worthwhile to parse these political hagiographies as the slop that they are, but this was a takedown I will probably reread. Happy Labor Day weekend.

Michael Tracey's avatar

I just laughed at the thought of you laughing at it.

SW's avatar

You did a great job with this article. I had no idea she was heavily involved in the recovered memory/Satanic sex cult hysteria. Did you know that the best selling book SYBIL was also exposed as a complete fabrication?

Michael Tracey's avatar

Virtually all mass-market commercial products in that period promoting ritual sex abuse claims turned out to be hoaxes. See also the huge best-selling book "Michelle Remembers."

Joesph J Esposito's avatar

That seems like feminist revisionism. I just read an article that says Sybil was a true story and some in the psychobabble field have discredited it due to jealousy over the profits made from the book & movie. w0e-MEN'S crimes against children are always minimized like so many feminists & beta/cucks are doing with the Clancy MONSTER. Therefore I wouldn't doubt it if it were indeed a true story, just

Joesph J Esposito's avatar

I don't believe Sybil was a fabrication. There are evil mothers that torture their children. I just read an article that says there was never any empirical evidence that it didn't happen and that some in the psychology field chose to discredit the story simple because they were jealous the book and movie made money

J Carson's avatar

Article deserves a wide audience. I hope your reach is expanding.

It helps when people upgrade to paid subscriptions! Just sayin'

Michael had recommended the book, "Satan's Silence", about the satanic panic in another thread. I read it recently, and double recommend it.

It includes Steinem and the feminist movement's role in promoting the panic.

People were imprisoned for decades on the basis of the most absurd, grotesque lies imaginable.

Tim N's avatar

Outrageous! Steinem was just a third-rate reactionary huckster, as it turns out, and her CIA employment wasn't the worst of it, which is even more astonishing. Nice work, Michael.

Diamond Boy's avatar

Tim N yes you are correct but I would reframe your contention about hucksterism. The point of being a huckster is to make money and in this she was first order. 😆👍

Random's avatar

Dunno Mickey, I find her pushing of feminism and male hatred, fear and resentment more worrying than the Satanic storyline.

Michael Tracey's avatar

Write your own article on that then

Random's avatar

Maybe, one day, Mr. Tracey, one day. For now, I am too bored, too lazy, and having a job helps too.

Far easier to write some ironic 20 words-as-replies, even if it still does not pay.

I will assume that when I do, out of contrarianism, you will promote me to your audience!

N Martin's avatar

They are one and the same. Stranger Danger is anti-male.

Val Crosby's avatar

They are interlinked. The latter is an extreme consequence of the former.

Joesph J Esposito's avatar

YES. ALL the fe-MALE YENTAS like Steinem telegraphed their sexual frustration with their beta/cuck husbands throughout the 1970's and 1980's by using the psychology field to export their orgasm problems & rape fetishes around the world, not to mention their PENIS ENVY. Ms. was coined by Steinem's cohort and is short for MISTRESS. Steinem also tried to coin the word HER-story as in HIS-story. She was definitely Satanic as Lindsay Clancy is also.

Kathryn Hennessy's avatar

Thank you Michael. We need to be reminded of this. I had almost forgotten the children satanic frenzy and I never knew Steinem was such a supporter. Ugh! Excellent work. Kathryn from Brooklyn.

A Andersen's avatar

Great article. Sadly, I see a parallel of Steinem & her supporters to Massie and me. I love his libertarian aspects but his Epstein obsession seems eerily similar to Steinem's. And this summary of the 1980's Satanic Panic is tying in well with the Epstein thing. Maybe ritual child sexual abuse is an innate human fear. Anyway, you mentioned Zorro Ranch. Just wondering if you went out there and found any bodies while you were in that great State of New Mexico, oops, I mean New America.

Richard Patton's avatar

I just signed up as a new member!

I lived through the satanic ritual panic. Everyone was thinking about child sex abuse. I was accused of abusing our 4 year-old daughter in my divorce proceedings. I got visitation, which my ex periodically cut off, forcing me to court. She also went to the police with accusations. I went through two police investigations. After the second one, the judge told my lawyer that he could not give me visitation, not because he believed I was guilty of anything, but because my daughter, trained by her mother, was getting better at lying about me. I never saw my daughter again.

It was in 1983, and I have always believed that the moral panic of satanic sex abuse was part of a larger moral panic involving fathers in the family. It was a cheap way to break up families. I remember the McMartin Daycare case. Female moral panic is a real thing, used by feminists to increase their power. After Satanic Ritual panic, there was the 'campus rape crisis'. Young men were accused and had their lives ruined by it. Often the woman was lying.

It is how feminists gain power. It's a feature of feminism. The latest manifestation is the Clancy case.

Raghav's avatar

Brilliant. I had no idea of this history

Michael Tracey's avatar

Many such cases...

Good stuff, Michael. Calling out the awful NYT at every possible opportunity is a great service to us all.

As I began to read I was thinking, this is just red meat for the dudes upset over Tracey’s Clancy essays. But then I reached the Satanic Panic expose and thought, damn, how could I not know this.

This essay provides a huge public service. It’s a shame only Tracey’s crowd will read it.

As to the very funny remarks quoted below, I think putting the audience into therapy would reveal that indeed both events actually occurred.

“It’s unclear if a puff of purple smoke suddenly appeared as she made this statement.

Or if a winged unicorn flew past the stage.”

Michael Tracey's avatar

I've definitely heard of people outside my putative "crowd" reading various Substack articles of mine. So, all is not lost.

hodag's avatar

The idea that satanists were committing crimes was not a wholly made up idea. When I was a kid a young woman from a block away was kidnapped, gang raped, sexually mutilated and killed by a circle of losers known as The Ripper Crew who said it was a satanic ritual. They killed others. This is well attested to in court.

Likewise, Richard Ramirez in LA said he did it for satan.

How these very real crimes go translated into the belief that it was widespread among normies...well look at the people faking Touretteson Tik Tok.

Oh, the satanists have not gone away. Look up 764 and online child abuse. Or the satanic Nazis in the Azov group in the Ukrainian army (not making it up).

SteadFastSpirit 42's avatar

Ya, Satanic ritual abuse and sacrafice has been documented all throughout history. There are several cases that have taken place in the recent past; some more easily verified then others. So many modern examples that he convienently left out makes me seriously question the Motive behind this supposed "deep dive."
