Good conversation. I think Hilton’s position that U.S. foreign policy won’t be part of his job as governor, so he doesn’t want to opine about it, is the right one, so I have no problem with his answer.
Still, drumming up foreign investment, with the associated reciprocal junkets will, as I assume he would agree, be in his remit if he’s elected, so he may end up having to say more than he wants to about various situations, likely including Israel/Palestine.
And while I believe Hilton is right that disproportionately high gas prices in California result from state policy choices, the reality in 2026 – and this won’t change overnight even if he becomes governor – is that the most direct exposure of the U.S. to the closure of the Persian Gulf (and the Red Sea, as of last week) may be the gasoline that California now has to import from Asia (since their own refinery capacity has been legislated away). So that’s another foreign policy area he may feel induced to speak about at some point.
