What makes him "dangerous" IMO is not the socialist aspect of it but the totalitarian aspect of the woke, what we saw in 2020 - the Evergreen College generation, the puritans, the zealots, as embodied in Mamdani and AOC: Woke Socialism is different from regular socialism becuase it replaces "identity" for class.

That’s a bit of revisionist history though, isn’t it? It was Hillary Clinton and co. who were using identity as a weapon. The Bernie/AOC movement was never about identity, it was always about class. In fact, the establishment democrats used identity against them.

Look, I became disillusioned with Bernie and AOC years ago, but we can at least be honest with our critiques, right? I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just misremembered and aren’t acting in bad faith.

I don’t know about governing but the absolute unhinged reaction about Zohran by the Republicans has made me want to root for him.

Voting against their own values and interests is a pretty wild take.

The same people who think Mamdani is going to bring sharia law or whatever here tend to support the actual jihadist terrorist that murica supports in running Syria.

Moronic IDIOCRACY

Violante of Naxos's avatar

If electing a jihadist is not a threat to Western Civilization, what is? Geez.

Absurd Orwellian hyperbole, and people like you that spew it.

Violante of Naxos's avatar

Refusing to condemn the phrase ‘globalize the intifada’.. means what to you?

Thats like refusing to condemn terrorism or nazism.

And anyone that doesn't worship St. Charlie is responsible for killing him. Dichotomy another one...

She's a feckless magatard - vaccine lunacy and all.

People with no knowledge base resort to personal attacks. I’m living through idiocracy.

Two likely white feminist women who are good with voting for someone who believes women shouldn’t have the right to choose their own husbands. The real handmaids tale is Islam.

Voting for people with values directly against your own interest isn’t a good plan.

".. someone who believes women shouldn’t have the right to choose their own husbands.."

You're a lazy liar

Are you saying that Muslim women do not have the right to chose their own husbands? If so, can you give a link to that dictate in their Holy book the Qur'an?

“… the argument is that a ‘One on One’ contrast between Cuomo and Sliwa would have changed the dynamics of the race …”

Proofreading: should this be “between Cuomo and Mamdani”?

Yes. Fixed the error

Ranked Choice Voting in NY City began in 2021. Before 2021 if a candidate didn't get over 50% there was a runoff. In this case the runoff would've been between Cuomo and Mamdani (a failed rapper) and Cuomo would likely have won.

Oscar Alx's avatar

Whatever the supposed failings of Mr Mamdani are, the total and utter immorality is not one of them, but rather something what his opponents stood for. That they received almost 50% of the votes is a sign of considerable depravity.

I would "like" your comment, but you're a putinista. Scott Ritter - too funny.

I live nowhere near New York, but I've enjoyed your coverage.

NYC had a vaccine mandate for its public servants—Get vaccinated or you’re fired. Why couldn’t it be—Get vaccinated or you can’t work until you do or when the mandate is lifted? Mandami said he supports forced vaccination of NYC’s public servants(even with a vaccine that neither stops infection nor prevents transmission).

NYC & NY State also have some wacky energy laws that are very financially harmful to its residents- renters, coops, single/multi family. Mandami supports them too. If he’s a socialist—why does he want to financially burden NYers even more?

I didn’t vote for him because he had AOC rally for him (and I’m socialist-leaning).

NYC has always been a city that its residents love—but a city that hates its residents. Should I pretend to believe that this will change under a Mandami admin?

Rob (c137)'s avatar

Should we pretend that this will change with any of the bullshit corrupt parties?

Both the DemoCRIPS and RepubliBLOODS are gangs that couldn't care about the working class.

Voting is irrelevant when the system is designed to only be winnable by one of the 2 corporate Mafia parties.

I'm waiting for Michael's cynical dive into the Mamdani movement as it moves forward. That should be interesting.

The RNC wants Mamdani. Besides being a political foil, his policies and political views need to be exposed. American voters, especially younger people, need to see the true cost of socialism and the impact it will have on them. Rent control doesn’t work as landlords won’t improve their holdings and builders won’t build. Price controls won’t work. Sellers will go elsewhere. Taxation will have limited impact as the wealthy and wealth creators can pick up and move.

All of these aspects, as well as the greater intrusion on the lives of all New Yorkers, will be on full display.

you lost me at your description of Boro Park as the strangest place you've ever been to describing Jews as scampering and going into a sex segregated synagogue. imagine if anyone would describe Dearborn Michigan in the same way.

Great piece, looking forward to part 2! I say this as a denizen of "flyover country." Also, I see no downside to Michael Tracey becoming an avatar for the NY press corps, a great redeemer of sorts who will wash away all of their sins.

Haha. I’ve paid it absolutely no attention. The right is getting as bad as the left. Best to tune them out.
