Since I published my article Friday about the ongoing, Australia-style “lockdown” experiment being run in a small patch of southeastern Connecticut, messages keep piling up in my inboxes from the exasperated college students who have found themselves the experiment’s unwilling subjects. Uniformly, they are very thankful for the coverage, which is certainly not being provided by their tediously predictable in-house campus newspaper.
I've put the ff question up on Twit/FB... no results.. So....here goes again....
I'm fully and completely vaxxed. Why the hell should I give a damn whether or not someone else is vaxxed? Or isn't wearing a mask? I got my shots...so now what the hell is going on?
Devil's advocate, because I don't have a strong opinion on this yet:
Unvaccinated people catching and spreading COVID allows for more breakthrough infections (which still carry some risk to vaccinated people even if it's a *much* smaller one). It helps more mutations and variants emerge, increasing the chances of a variant that isn't very responsive to our current vaccines and is much more dangerous, which would put even vaccinated people at serious risk. Also, some people legitimately can't be vaccinated and have to rely on herd immunity, which a large unvaccinated population prevents us from achieving.
Thanks for replying; it's remarkable how little response I've gotten to this question. Your first point of the unvaxxed spreading a new variant...well, for me, that's not a significant risk thus far despite the fear mongering from MSM. I'm not saying I think I'm bullet proof, I just think I have a higher chance of getting killed in a car wreck than getting the Vid in this manner. Sure there's going to be outliers and exceptions, but not in a way that bothers me in the slightest. (I'm willing to be corrected with facts on this tho'!)
Those people who are unable to take the vax? IDK who/what their current state of health is that would prevent it and I hope they come out okay. BUT their vulnerability to the Vid has nothing to do with me. Esp if I'm vaxxed.
So, my take away, in regard to my question is that being vaxxed, I'm good. I oughta be able to travel freely, eat out where/when I want to and go to concerts etc. I'm not in danger. The threat to me from the Vid is much less than me dying in a car wreck.
I think you are right about the Biden admin and pushing the vax, but there is something deeper going on with the Dem base. I think they are pushing Biden hard to take a "firm" line on this because there is something else going on. I am privy to a large NGO's response to the virus, and I am getting the feeling it is more of an environmental issue with a lot of the far-left base. Nothing I can put my finger on, but that is the feeling I am getting. That they feel the world, and especially the US, is an unclean place and they need to act accordingly.
But, as I said, this is just a feeling at this point.

I guess I was responding to your question less in terms of a vaxxed person's personal risk and more in terms of why the vaxxed population more generally might still have a vested interest in the size of the population that remains un-vaxxed.
You've raised maybe the most important set of questions at this time. The public health industry has worked itself into a place from which it cannot leave. When "15 Days to Slow the Spread" because "30 More Days to Slow the Spread" and then somehow morphed into "Zero Covid", that was the time for the adults in public health to stand up and so, "No, we can't do this!" We now know for a plain fact that Zero Covid is not going to happen anywhere on Earth except New Zealand, but if that's not the goal, then what is? Public health has no answer for that, and until they do, anyone who's trying to "follow the science" is going to continue with this fool's errand of ridding the world of a microscopic virus that replicates itself billions of times a day.

As much as we've seen quite a few instances where woke college students have enforced their orthodoxy on college professors and administrations, the fact remains that CT college represents authoritarian control over an essentially powerless student body - at least in the short term. As your MA college Covid admin emailed you, even without vaccination this cohort is at very low risk. As much as the college community goes on about "privilege", CT college is using it's privileged position to lord it over these kids for virtually no rational reason.
This kind of authoritarian bent is apparently intoxicating, and hard for those exercising it to give it up. Yesterday we had the Vice President tweeting:
"By vaccinating the unvaccinated, increasing our testing and masking, and protecting the vaccinated, we can end this pandemic. That’s exactly what we are committed to doing."
Say what? Why the hell do the vaccinated need to be protected from the unvaccinated? Is she saying the vaccines don't work? I take this as an illogical and irrational argument in favor of Biden's unconstitutional attempt to force private business to mandate that employees be vaccinated. I'm vaccinated, and unless you have a valid reason to not get the jab, I recommend it. But like so much else the government does "for our own benefit" it destroys our rights and makes the US less the home of freedom and liberty.
I think that's because she, and Biden who made the same statement during his speech on mandating vaccines, don't really mean what they are saying. They are just trying 1. To distract from Afghanistan and 2. To turn this whole thing into a political fight between the Dems and GOP. Although in Joe's case he may really mean it - he just understand what he means.
