There couldn’t have been a more predictable wave of hysteria after Donald Trump said at one of his rambling rallies this month that if other NATO countries don’t “pay up,” he might just have to tell Russia to go ahead and “do whatever the hell they want” with them. Trump was actually recounting a vague anecdote — something he purportedly said to an unidentified European leader several years ago. Yet the premise of the ensuing hysteria was that Trump, if re-elected in 2024, would surely move to withdraw the U.S. from NATO as his first sinister order of business — because of course, Trump continues to have a burning desire to help Vladimir Putin.
It is impossible to make the typical Trump fan look at what Trump actually did rather than what he talked about. It's a form of wish fulfillment by self hypnosis,
The very under reported story of us waxing 200 some Russians in Syria is another indication of Trumps position vis a vis Russia. I was always impressed that Trump (who obviously loves to boast about everything) down played that episode. Wisely.
What shall we say? How about MSM lie about everything: no truth, but “the truth” emerges from the monolith.
I just reread Samuel P Huntington’s “dead souls” essay from 2004. Trump represents the nationalist convictions of the American populace and speaks to their best interests. Mostly he rejects the cosmopolitan, internationalist position of US global power projection. He believes in the imperium, but he also believes that the cosmopolitan position has literally destroyed America : which it has, undoubtedly .
I recommend the article, it provides a simple perspective and being 20 years old it is much less encumbered by culture war shibboleths.
Our author is correct there is some very shabby thinking going on out there. I think it’s the trolly conundrum. They lie to us, because they want to save us from ourselves, save us from our own ignorance, so the lie is a good thing.
